Lest We Forget
Writing poetry is one of those parts of literature that is always steeped in a mixture of intellectual snobbery, practical commonality, the appeal of the ludicrous, the pleasure of the fine treatment of words and the world of the everyday. I like the poetry of Shakespeare and Chaucer for its depth and its bawdiness and can appreciate the recognised poets whose classics are read through the ages telling stories and making us think. I like simple forms as much as complex forms and although I write poetry I do not think that I am a cut above anybody else, yet I endeavour to write the best I can offer for the pleasure of the reader.
In total contradiction to the last comment in the previous paragraph I will also write for myself or to make a comment on what is going on around us. Like many poets, if I can call myself such, I also write about that which affects me, and sometimes it hits the spot with others.
